10 Years and Counting: Why the Bend Marathon is a Run to Remember

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Bend Marathon and Half has been one of my favorite races for years. In fact, nine years ago, I ran the half marathon and had this to say:

Trust me, this is the latest addition to your ‘running bucket list.’ You won’t regret it. Prepare to be blown away!

Now, in its 10th year, the Bend Marathon & Half is back and better than ever, offering runners a variety of distances to choose from. Whether you’re looking to run a 5K, 10K, half marathon, or full marathon, you’ll get a chance to experience the beauty of Bend, Oregon, all while starting and finishing in the iconic Old Mill District.

For seasoned marathoners who have already run Portland, Vancouver, and Eugene, the Bend Marathon offers a refreshing change of pace. But it’s also an excellent destination race for anyone tackling their first marathon.

The scenic courses showcase everything that makes Bend such a beloved place, including stunning views of Drake Park, the Deschutes River, Discovery Park, and Tetherow.

The full marathon course even takes runners along the Cascade Lakes Highway, where they’ll enjoy a 10-mile out-and-back section along the Rimrock Trail. The half marathon follows much of the same course but skips the out-and-back portion, offering more views of the western side of Bend while still delivering a great downtown experience.

For those who want a shorter race, the 10K and 5K distances are perfect, hugging the popular Deschutes River trails and offering easy access to Bend’s vibrant downtown area.

One unique aspect of running in Bend is its elevation—at 3,600 feet, it can take some getting used to. But once you’re acclimated, the fresh air and beautiful surroundings make every stride worth it.

What sets the Bend Marathon & Half apart from other events is the race organizers’ attention to detail. I’ve always been impressed with their planning and commitment to creating a seamless race experience for everyone involved.

Whether you’re there to run, explore Bend, or enjoy a weekend getaway, this race is an excellent choice.

Here’s to celebrating 10 years of an incredible race in one of the most scenic and welcoming spots in Oregon. The Bend Marathon & Half truly deserves a place on your running bucket list.
