Rubber Meets the Road: Mount to Coast’s R1R Steps Up Quietly

One of the best new shoe companies we’ve been loving this past year is Mount to Coast. Their focus on road shoes that dominate the miles has led to some impressive releases, and we’ve had the pleasure of reviewing their R1 (racing), S1 (daily training), and P1 (protection/stability) models.

All of these shoes share a clean, minimalistic design and prioritize functional construction, making them stand out in a crowded market. Today, we’re highlighting the latest addition to their lineup, the Mount to Coast R1R.

If you’ve read our review of the original R1, you’ll know we mentioned the distinct sound of the CPU outsole on wet surfaces and indoor floors. Here are some of the responses we had:

…[A]fter several weeks of consistent wear, I’ve noticed a rather noisy drawback: these shoes squeak quite noticeably on indoor floors and even a bit on wet surfaces. While it’s not a concern all things considered, it’s worth noting. Be prepared to make your presence heard.

Road Warrior: Reviewing the brand new Mount to Coast R1

It seems Mount to Coast heard this feedback (literally) because the R1R keeps the core design and performance elements that earned so much positive feedback but introduces a key upgrade: a rubber (hence the second “R”) outsole.

This update adds about half an ounce of weight to the shoe (now around 8.5-9 ounces in a men’s 9), but it’s a small trade-off for the enhanced grip and quieter stride. The shoe is still impressively light, making it ideal for long-distance runs where weight matters.

If you’re in the market for a versatile road shoe, definitely check out the R1R or the classic R1. We think this small, yet impactful update makes the R1R a standout option, and we can’t wait to see what Mount to Coast has in store next.
