My first attempt at the Cascade Half Marathon was back in 2013. Despite being injured and running in below-freezing temperatures, I still came away with an unforgettable experience. In 2014, I returned to cold but dry conditions, using the race to celebrate a recommitment to running.
Fast forward to 2019, and it was a rainy affair, while 2020 treated runners to an almost spring-like day with clear skies and 50-degree temperatures. Each year has brought its own unique weather and memories, and the Cascade Half remains a race with an undeniable charm.

This event has a special energy that motivates runners to start the year on the right foot. It strikes the perfect balance: a strong turnout of around 500+ participants but with the feel of an intimate, small-town race. After a hiatus, the race returned triumphantly in 2023 with over 300 runners and the upcoming event is now set for Sunday, January 19, 2025!
The Course: Remote and Serene
The race starts and finishes at Cascade Junior High School, with the course following an out-and-back route along quiet, rural paved roads. It’s the kind of course where you can zone out and fully enjoy the remoteness of the countryside. Long, straight stretches are interspersed with gentle curves as the route winds through picturesque farmland.
In addition to the half marathon, there’s a 10k and a 2-miler, both of which follow the same peaceful initial stretch of the route. For half marathoners, water stations are available at miles 2 and 5 (as well as 8 and 11 on the return). Portable toilets are also typically positioned along the course, ensuring runners stay comfortable.
Amenities and Post-Race Treats
January weather in Oregon is always unpredictable, but Cascade Junior High has you covered—literally. The school’s men’s and women’s locker rooms will be open for changing, showering, and warming up before and after the race. After crossing the finish line, you can refuel with hot soup, fresh-baked cookies, and coffee from I-Jive Coffee to celebrate your accomplishment.
Award-Winning Tradition

If you’re on the fence about signing up, remember this race’s accolades. The Cascade Half Marathon was voted the Best Road Half Marathon of 2012 by Run Oregon readers, and it continues to uphold that legacy as a must-run event in the region.
