Vest in Class: The Mammut Aenergy TR WB Hybrid Vest is Great

Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate the value of running vests. Initially I was quite strict about not layering, but I have since added vests to my running gear, particularly insulated ones for colder weather and have slowly started coming around. Recently, I have been testing a lighter weight trail running vest from Mammut, the Aenergy TR WB Hybrid Vest, and it has made me a convert.

Design and Appearance

The Mammut Aenergy TR WB Hybrid Vest is sort of a mouthful (I will just call it the “vest” going forward), but otherwise straightforward and functional, with many great qualities. It has a sleek design and a slim profile, making it look great in both color options.

The classic black color, with its white accents, adds a bit of pop, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. The white pops and looks solid as well.

Performance and Functionality

The vest is designed to keep the core protected from wind, and it performs exceptionally well in this regard. It effectively shields against wind, making it suitable for early morning and late evening runs when temperatures are low, but the wind is higher.

Weighing only 2.3 ounces (!), the vest is super lightweight and packable, allowing for easy full-zip on and off – which also goes well up to the chin to allow for maximum heat. It can be conveniently packed away if temperatures rise.

Material and Construction

The vest’s construction contributes to its performance and comfort. Despite its slim fit, the stretchy back panel offers flexibility, accommodating various movements during runs or hikes. The entire vest is made from recycled ripstop nylon, making it durable and environmentally friendly. This material choice makes it ideal for trail running or hiking in uncertain conditions.

Storage and Reflectivity

While the vest focuses on functionality, it also includes some thoughtful features. There is one chest pocket for storage (although I personally prefer jackets with hand pockets). This is a minor personal preference and does not detract from the vest’s overall utility. The vest includes reflective qualities, which have proven useful so far and will become increasingly valuable as the days grow shorter.
