The release of the 2022 Cloudmonster marked a significant turning point for On, transforming the company’s image from a mere “lifestyle” shoe brand to a legitimate contender in the realm of high-performance running shoes. Historically, On had been associated with visually appealing shoes that often sacrificed comfort and flexibility, creating a somewhat gimmicky reputation in some circles.

However, the original Cloudmonster shattered this trend, representing a monumental shift and resounding success for many. Our evaluation of the original version led us to conclude that it stood out as the most impeccably constructed “running” shoe in their product lineup. While it wasn’t a perfect shoe, our review was peppered with phrases like:
- “The On Cloudmonster feels like the most well-constructed true ‘running’ shoe in their arsenal.”
- “If you have been out on On before, we strongly suggest you take the plunge in these.”
Building upon the triumph of its predecessor, we have spent the past few weeks putting in the miles on the updated iteration — the aesthetically pleasing On Cloudmonster 2, scheduled for release on 2.24.24.
Looks:
I seldom find fault with the aesthetics of On shoes – perhaps influenced by my approaching 40s and the growing number of peers donning On footwear. However, the original Cloudmonster emerged as one of their initial offerings that authentically captured the essence of true running shoes, a characteristic seamlessly carried over to the Cloudmonster 2.
In particular, our reviewed colorway stands out as a remarkable improvement from the deep purple featured in the v1 pair we previously assessed. To be fair, the Cloudmonster NOW has over 24 colorways between men and women! We are sure that the Cloudmonster 2 will receive the same sort of color treatment if this style isn’t your favorite.
This iteration boasts a predominantly white exterior – which I know many runners are passionate about (on both ends of the spectrum). White shoes and running in the Pacific Northwest can be at odds sometimes. Yet, the Cloudmonster 2 incorporates bursts of orange on the midsole, tongue, and as a secondary layer of the upper.
This infusion of flash is tastefully executed, providing a friendly nod without overwhelming the overall design. The inclusion of speckled laces adds an unexpected yet delightful touch, bringing the entire aesthetic together. This rendition of the Cloudmonster 2 is truly a beautiful shoe.
Construction:
Upper:
The upper mesh is crafted from 100% recycled polyester, providing a breathable and comfortable feel. It effectively secures the foot and delivers the expected performance of an upper. While the lacing structure maintains its familiar design, it has been slightly revised, reducing some material from the lace holders.
Although the tongue lacks extensive cushioning (which isn’t necessarily essential), the heel counters that by offering a secure hold with its cushioning. It’s a really comfortable and pretty stable ride.
Midsole:
The Cloudmonster garnered attention for featuring On’s most substantial CloudTec cushion, boasting an impressive 30mm to the heel. With the Cloudmonster 2, it’s a case of “go big or go home,” as the enhanced heel stack elevates the cushioning game even further—reaching up to 35mm in the heel and 29mm in the forefoot.
The Cloudmonster 2 builds upon the foundation laid by its predecessor, enhancing its strengths. While the Helion Superfoam featured in the V1 remains, it has undergone refinements after a year of research to provide even greater cushioning.
In contrast to the rigid sensation sometimes associated with speedboards and plates, the Cloudmonster line effectively cushions impacts—a notable improvement for On. The board’s shape has been slightly adjusted and is now composed of a nylon blend, facilitating smooth transitions between steps.
Previously recognized as one of On’s most cushioned offerings (although personally, I have a soft spot for the Cloudsurfer), the Cloudmonster 2 perhaps surpasses its predecessor by a slight margin in terms of cushioning.
Outsole:
The outsole of On shoes is generally satisfactory, although their distinctive design implies that they may not achieve peak performance. However, for most individuals, this distinction is likely negligible since we aren’t typically executing extreme, speed-induced maneuvers. The Cloudmonster 2 model features slightly deeper cavities in its outsole, but I think it’s just a small adjustment. Regardless, the outsole’s performance remains commendable and up to the challenge without much issue.
Overall Impression:
After thorough testing and examination, my overall impression of the Cloudmonster 2 is undeniably positive. Building upon the solid groundwork of its predecessor, this iteration showcases significant improvements in various aspects.
I still favor the Cloudsurfer as my favorite On running shoe, but the Cloudmonster 2 passes its predecessor with this updated version. Overall, the Cloudmonster 2 stands as a testament to On’s commitment to continuous improvement in the running sphere.
