Unveiling the Ultimate Winter Armor: The R5 GORE-TEX Infinium Insulated Jacket

Now that it’s finally starting to get colder, darker, and wetter out here in the Pacific Northwest, we thought it would be a good time to start testing some of the latest warm weather gear over at Run Oregon. GORE-TEX has been a household name in the outdoor space for decades now.

Living in Oregon, it’s almost impossible to not have come across their gear. We recently checked out their popular R5 GORE-Tex Infinium Jacket.

Looks:

This jacket, an ISPO winner, not only boasts an award but also captivates with its aesthetic appeal. Available in four color options, each exudes an understated elegance synonymous with high-performance running jackets. The design is relatively straightforward, featuring a standard base color complemented by additional accents for a touch of flair. The jacket’s construction imparts a faint checkered pattern, contributing to its overall fine appearance.

Fit:

However, while aesthetics are noteworthy, the true essence lies in the fit and functionality of a running jacket. With a slimmer fit profile, it’s crucial to consider sizing carefully. As someone accustomed to a size large, opting for an extra-large proved to be a wise choice, offering a form-fitting profile with added room for layering—an aspect I particularly appreciate. For those comfortable with a slimmer profile, standard sizing remains a suitable option.

The arms, especially after sizing up, cater to individuals with longer extremities, achieving an almost ideal length that sits right at the wristbone. The jacket’s length strikes a balance, providing ample coverage on the bottom without extending excessively on the torso. An elastic band and drawstring ensure a tight and secure fit when necessary.

Function:

Transitioning to the jacket’s functionality, it’s evident that the ISPO award is not bestowed lightly, indicating an infusion of cutting-edge technology. Here’s a quote from an ISPO reviewer:

“We may have seen the materials before, however, it’s the way in which the layers have been married together, which in our opinion sets the jacket apart from the all ones available.”

Despite its seemingly lightweight nature (0.8 ounces), this jacket remarkably delivers impressive warmth during chilly night runs. Often, running jackets fall into extremes—either too light and breathable with insufficient warmth or too heavy, risking overheating. This jacket masterfully navigates the middle ground.

The reflective qualities of the jacket are a notable bonus, enhancing visibility—a crucial element, especially during nighttime runs.

For Consideration:

While the jacket emits a subtle swishing sound when in motion, it remains comparatively quieter than some alternatives. Although some may find it noticeable, the compromise seems minor given the overall quality of the product.

Overall:

In terms of winter running versatility, this jacket stands out as one of the highest quality options I’ve encountered. Its comfort is so exceptional that wearing it casually becomes tempting, regardless of its running jacket appearance. The quality justifies its price tag, and the expectation of long-lasting durability further eases the cost consideration.
