If you’re part of the Oregon running community, chances are you’re familiar with the dynamic force that is Paula Harkin. Renowned for organizing exceptional races under Run with Paula Events and assisting in managing the Portland Running Company, Paula has become a standout figure in the local running scene.
Fifteen years ago, on January 1, 2009, Paula made a pivotal decision to redefine her running focus. Setting a goal of running at least one continuous mile every day, she embraced a commitment devoid of breaks, rest days, or excuses. Reflecting on this transformative choice, Paula shares, “I decided that, throughout my challenges, injuries, and dynamic life events, I could ‘run myself better.’ My running streak has given me the motivation to stay fit mentally and physically every single day.”
The challenge of running daily is significant, yet Paula has taken it a step further, maintaining an impressive average of over 6 miles per day. In the current year alone, Paula is on track to surpass 2300 miles. Two years ago, she achieved an extraordinary milestone by completing the equivalent of running around the planet. Paula’s run streak boasts almost 5,500 consecutive days, accumulating an astounding total of 33,460 miles and counting. Notably, during this streak, Paula accomplished the remarkable feat of earning her Six-Star Marathon Major Medal, competing in the world’s six most renowned marathons (Boston, Chicago, New York, London, Berlin, Tokyo).
To honor this incredible journey, Paula and her team are hosting a group run/walk at The Run Pub, located at 2258 NW Raleigh Street in Portland, on New Year’s Eve at 9 am. Community members are encouraged to join in the celebration, but a word of caution: this is the very ground where many impressive run streaks have taken root!
