Short Race, Long Night: 2023 Longest Night Mile

With marathons, runners have to be careful about not going out to fast in those first miles because there are 26.2 ahead of them. With a 1-mile race, runners get to put it all out there from the very beginning and just hold on.

If you haven’t tried a 1-mile race yet, consider the Longest Night Mile. The possibly shortest race of your year can coincide with Winter Solstice, aka the longest night of the year. And taking on four laps around the Phoenix High School Track will benefit others too.

Registration for this event has two payment options: two boxes of dry cereal or $10. Either way you are supporting students through Southern Oregon University’s Food Bank. If you have a favorite cereal (my go-to is Honey Nut Cheerios) then you could pass it along before taking on your mile. All proceeds from this event will go toward SOU Food Bank.

There will be multiple heats to the event, to spread out the participants and the paces. Ribbons will be awarded to the top three in each age group. All men who run sub-4:00 minutes and all women who run sub-4:20 will earn a $100 prize. And before you ask, the website clearly says no roller skates, bicycles, or skateboards so those miles have to be earned with just your feet.
