Race Preview: 2017 Mastondon 10(ish) miler (Redmond)

mastondon-logoOn a section of BLM land called the Maston Trail Network you will find rolling trails that twist, turn and roll for miles. The area is also known as Juniper Trail and the entire system sits just to the south east of Cline Butte between Redmond and Tumalo. For the past 3 years, SuperFit Productions has been putting on a fun and fast 10(ish) mile trail race, called the Mastondon, that bills itself as a great early season test to see where the engines are at.

The course is relatively flat with only 400′ of gain/loss, which is Central Oregon speak for really flat. I run this course and this area a lot and can tell you that the jutting rocks and hard packed soil make for epic trail running. In speaking to “Super Dave” Thomason, the RD for Superfit, he acknowledges that the races will be a challenge given the snow accumulation over the past month or so. I call that epic.

The Mastondon 10(ish) miler is a great way to get those trail legs in shape for the spring and summer runs while also giving back to the community. Superfit Productions likes to give back. This year the race will donate 10% of the proceeds to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Oregon.

When: Sunday March 5th. Race starts at 9am

Where: Maston Trail Network in Tumalo, Oregon

Registration:Through Ultra Sign-Up or at FootZone in Bend on March 4th from 12-6. Cost is $45 plus $5 for BLM fee.
