Strava Segment of the Week: Runway West in Salem

We haven't had many segments in Salem, so I picked one that looks like a nice scenic route with no hills. It's named "Runway West" (there's also one going in the opposite direction) and it's run on the Edgewater Trail in Salem along the Willamette River. The route starts at the trail where Highway 221 makes a left turn to parallel Highway 22 and runs southwest to the next major trail access path at Rosemont Ave NW. The total distance is 0.7 miles, and as of January 27, 2017, it's been attempted 332 times by 53 people. Our segment from two weeks ago, the Clackamas River Trail Loop, has not seen any faster attempts since we posted it two weeks ago, but keep trying!

As of January 27, 2017, the course records for the are:

Women’s: Samantha Ryder from March 2016, 5:37

Men’s:  Hunter Mosman from December 2016, 4:29

So, can you beat their times and become the leader of this segment? You have until Thursday, February 9 at noon to try and break the record and see your name in “lights” on Run Oregon! We’ll post a new Segment next Friday at noon.

Strava is an online training and racing log for runners and cyclists. The basic account is free and requires you to create a login. There is also a premium version, but in order to run and record routes as described in this post, you do not need to subscribe to their premium service. Note that this is not sponsored by Strava, nor endorsed or supported in any way by Strava. It’s just a fun thing we’re going to do to give some speedy shout-outs to area runners and pose a challenge to those of you willing to take on their segment.

I started the Run Oregon blog in February 2007, because I felt like running in Oregon and SW Washington deserved more positive coverage. I also wanted to level the playing field so that small, non-profit races could compete with big events; and to support LOCAL race organizers. I'm a Creighton Bluejay (undergrad) and an Oregon Duck (Sports Marketing MBA), and I live in Tigard with my husband and two kids. My "real job" is working for an incredibly awesome math textbook company doing marketing and production.
