If you’re an Oregon runner, you know that the “Worst Day” can’t stop you. So, we’re giving away four pairs of entries to the Worst Day of the Year run on January 28. To enter, simply post a photo of your feet – Portland Airport style – in the “worst” conditions you’re running in this week. Share it to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #worstdayrun, starting today. We’ll draw winners on January 7, 12, 19, and 24, so keep an eye out!
I’m sure you’ve been to races with less than stellar weather and have thought to yourself that this must have been the worst day of the year to hold a running event. The people behind the “Worst Day of the Year” runs in Troutdale OR and Bothell WA have done some research, and they have found that the wettest and coldest day in these locations’ history was January 10th and February 8th, respectively, and now these 5k’s take place on a Saturday near those dates. This year the Troutdale event is scheduled for Saturday, January 28th.
The location for the Troutdale race is the golf course at McMenamin’s Edgefield property. There is lots of parking on race morning, and friendly volunteers will help you find the best spot. When I ran this race in 2016, I picked up my packet on race morning, which wasn’t an issue, but there’s also early packet pickup at Fleet Feet NW on January 27.
When you register, you will choose your start time (9am, 10am, or 11am), with each wave limited to 500 participants, and whether or not you would like to purchase chip timing. There are also long-sleeve event shirts for purchase, and every participants receives a Columbia Sportswear beanie hat.
Discount Code “runoregon” will give you a $7 discount off your registration.
The 5k course is a double loop on the gravel paths through the golf course next to the distillery. There are some short but steep hills, which will present you with beautiful views of the Columbia River. After the race, head inside the special event room next to the distillery, where you can warm up with some hot soup. There will also be a photo booth with Polar or Tropical themed green screen background, and don’t forget the costume contest, which will award some big prize money. And even if you don’t win the costume contest, running this race in costume will earn you a free beer.
