Race Preview: 2016 Run and Walk for Sight (Forest Grove)

I have professed my love for the small town run many times from this platform. It is an experience that is quite different from the big city races. With a 5K and 10K option, the Run and Walk for Sight in Forest Grove on September 17th contains the spirit of the small town run. I participated in the longer distance last year and had a blast, enjoying the views and well marked course.

Registration is currently open on RunSignUp.com, and is $35 for either distance. It does include a shirt if you register before September 8th. DOE registration is an additional $5, and the kids run is $5 as well, including a shirt if registered before the 2nd. Funds raised by this event are used to “Fund scholarships, purchase vision clinic equipment and assist the Pacific University AMIGOS program of volunteer optometric services”. This helps residents of western Washington County and developing countries with sight issues.

The race start and finish area is at Pacific University, at the corner of Cedar and 21st St in Forest Grove. The 10K course is a scenic and mostly flat loop in residential and industrial areas before returning to downtown. The 10K and 5K walk start at 9am with the 5K runners heading out 15 minutes after. The event is chip timed and there will be the standard top 3 overall awards in the male and female categories as well as the age brackets.

If the weather cooperates, this will be an excellent early fall race to enjoy some cooler temperatures. The later start time is a bonus as it allows participants to sleep in a little more on race day and arrive in Forest Grove on September 17th fully refreshed. I personally recommend this event, especially due to the fact that the proceeds go to a good cause.
