A new race favorite of mine, the Silvan Ridge Twilight 5K will take place on Saturday, August 20th, 2016 at 6 p.m. in the evening. The event starts and finishes at beautiful Silvan Ridge Winery, in Eugene’s gorgeous wine country. This popular event is a benefit for the Jane Higdon Foundation.
“The Jane Higdon Memorial Fund is dedicated to the dreams and aspirations of Jane Higdon, who was tragically killed May 31, 2006, when she was struck by a truck while on a bicycle training ride on one of Oregon’s beautiful rural roads outside her home in Eugene, at the age of 47.
Jane wanted to make a difference in the world and sought ways to make her life more meaningful. To continue Jane’s spirit in a significant and lasting way, her friends have established a fund with The Oregon Community Foundation seeded by Jane’s savings and other contributions.”
Being a wine club member at Silvan Ridge, I may be slightly biased when I say how wonderful the wine is. I honestly don’t think I am biased though – Silvan Ridge Winery produces some outstanding, well priced wine. Why am I starting out this race preview talking wine? Well, because participants are encouraged to hang around after the 5K and to listen to live music (on Silvan Ridge’s outdoor stage), purchase wine, beer and food. It’s a whole evening event, not just a race!
Choose to run or walk and enjoy the stunning beauty of the 5K course. This is an out-and-back style course, taking participants along a gently rolling, beautifully rural, wine country road. Last year, there were cows, goats and horses along the route to see. Also last year, there was an aid station placed so strategically, participants were able to get water twice!
Awards will be presented to the top three overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Registration is $20, and add $10 if you would like to purchase an event shirt. The shirt cut-off is August 15, so make sure to register and secure your shirt size in advance. Should you wish I register on race day, add $5 to the entry fee. Your registration does include an event logo wine glass – and I still have, and use, mine from last year! Packet pick-up (and same day registration) will be held race day at Silvan Ridge Winery beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Definitely get this event on your calendar – I’m excited to see if it is as fabulous as it was last year! Hooray for wine, running, food and friends!
