I found my mecca! Running and dogs are my two favorite things. Add ice cream and it just can’t get better. As a local runner, I’ve always enjoyed finding that rare Portland 5k that is actually flat. The picturesque riverside course could be considered fast, although pace at the Strut Your Mutt 5k depends on your running partner as much as it does on you. This event isn’t catered to runners and walkers alone – it’s gone to the dogs!

Jasper, my shelter alumni Plott Hound, has been my devoted training partner for years. The chance to run a 5k with him at my side, while helping raise awareness and funds promoting all things adoption, kept a grin on my face for the entire race. The course signage, available doggie water stops, and out-and-back route offered lots of encouragement and fun spectating for Jasper and myself. Our post run cool down included a dip (for Jasper) in a wading pool and walking around enjoying the festival-like atmosphere. This is a feel-good race that you’ll walk away from knowing you accomplished more than just getting a good run in.
