Race Preview: Heaven Can Wait 5K Run/Walk – Bend, OR

For 15 years, Bend has hosted this great race that started because one woman, Charlene Levesque and Central Oregon Running Klub saw a need and began formulating the idea of a women’s event that would promote early detection of cancer and encourage a healthy active lifestyle. The race now attracts over 4000 participants, including cancer survivors and patients alike along with their families, to Drake Park in Bend for a day long celebration of life.

The race, which started out as something more for women, has become a full fledged family event, where everyone comes out to support those who have lost someone to cancer or are battling it themselves or have downright beat it and are there to show the world. The race benefits Sara’s Project as well as educates the community about the importance of early detection of breast cancer, encourages community members to walk or run for their health and brings the community togetther in a celebration of life. There are many great reasons to come out for this one. And in case you needed another, where else are you going to see a pink fire truck?

The Heaven Can Wait 5K is relatively inexpensive and is a great excuse to get outside. The party starts at 9 am and goes all day with music, food, massages and exhibitor booths offering cancer prevention information, free mammogram sign-ups for eligible women and information on local programs and services. Bring your family and friends to join in the celebration.
