Race Preview: Cinco De Mayo (proposed) Course Preview

After a bad experience with train schedules interfering with running at one of Terrapin Events‘ races last fall, the race organizer is overhauling the courses of all their races to not cross any Amtrak rails. While permitting is still in progress, the proposed course maps are now available for the Cinco de Mayo 5k, 10k and Half Marathon.

For a preview of race atmosphere, registration options and post-race festivities, read Anne’s excellent post.

All race distances start and end near Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland. Parking is bound to be tricky, so if you can, take public transportation (the MAX stops within blocks of the start/finish).

The 5k route is a simple loop, starting northbound on Broadway, heading east on Oak St, south on Naito Parkway (with a bit of an elevation gain over one mile), a zigzag back to northbound Broadway and finishing near Salmon Street.

The 10k route also starts northbound on Broadway, zigzags north and west for 1.5 miles, takes a slightly different zigzag south and east for another 1.5 miles before joining the 5k route heading east on Oak St and taking the same path around to the finish on Broadway. Again the only significant hill is an elevation gain of 200ft over one mile on southbound Naito Pkwy.

The half marathon route is not for the faint of heart. At first the run follows the 10k route with its zigzags towards the northeast, but it continues farther out to a turnaround point at mile 3. Runners will then zigzag back to rejoin the 5k/10k route heading south on Naito Parkway. But when you see the 10k runners turning right to head towards Broadway, that’s when the half-marathoners’ real challenge hill starts. Continuing south on Barbur Blvd and turning onto Terwilliger, runners can look forward to a 400ft elevation gain over 2.5 miles, before reaching the summit near the Chart House and heading down the Terwilliger serpentines. (Think Shamrock Run 15k route in reverse.) Finally, the half marathon finishes the same place as the other two races.
