Going Bananas: Testing VitalFuel for Long-Run Energy

Everyone likely has a go-to fueling plan for long runs and races. Once it works, it tends to stick—because nutrition is personal, performance-critical, and not something most runners are eager to experiment with on the fly. From personal experience, it’s often mentally easier to rely on what you know than to introduce a new variable into an already delicate long-run equation, especially when the alternative involves learning—very quickly—why some fueling experiments should stay in training.

That said, part of what we try to do at Run Oregon—at least some of the time—is encourage runners to step outside their comfort zone. A new race. A new shoe. A new product. In this case, that product is VitalFuel. What makes VitalFuel a little different—at least right now—is its intentionally narrow focus: one flavor, not a rotating cast of experimental concoctions. Even more notably, it’s built around just two ingredients: banana and coconut water.

If you don’t like banana, I can tell you right now—these are unlikely to be for you. The flavor is unmistakably banana, but it’s not an artificial candy version or a syrupy sugar bomb. Think ripe banana purée rather than a banana slap to the face. It’s present, natural, and surprisingly balanced, without lingering sweetness or that aftertaste some gels leave behind.

With such a limited ingredient list, you’re getting a few notable benefits. Because VitalFuel is vegan, non-GMO, and free from thick syrups and sugar alcohols, it should be easier on the gut for many runners—though, as always, we’d still recommend testing it in training before race day. Each packet delivers 20 grams of natural carbohydrates from real banana (not processed sugars), providing steady fuel without the sharp spike and crash.

From a usability standpoint, these gels were easy to get down. The packaging looks like most others on the market and opens cleanly—even at faster running tempos. In use, it’s straightforward and largely mess-free, on par with what most runners are already used to.

Overall, VitalFuel does exactly what it sets out to do: provide clean, simple, reliable fuel for your runs. If you’re willing to go bananas for a single flavor, it delivers steady energy without the crash or gut drama. One packet, two ingredients, zero nonsense—it’s a peel of relief for runners looking for something natural and straightforward.
