Bivouac Racing continues to carve out a solid niche in Oregon’s trail scene with their State Park-focused events, and the Stub Stewart Trail Challenge returns on Sunday, April 5th. As part of their PNW State Park Trail Series, this race offers a flexible, runner-friendly format set inside one of northwest Oregon’s most runnable trail systems.
The event is built around a roughly 6.5-mile loop that packs in more variety than you might expect. Runners will move between sections of the famed Banks–Vernonia paved trail, gravel and unpaved roads, and classic park singletrack. The terrain rolls and climbs just enough to keep things engaging, with trails that are generally very runnable—though early spring conditions can mean some mud underfoot.
Distances truly cover all quarters of the marathon: quarter, half, three-quarter, and full marathon options are all available. Quarter marathon runners complete one loop, while longer distances stack additional loops. The half marathon mixes things up by sending runners one loop clockwise and the next counterclockwise, so you’re never running the exact same route twice. It’s a smart design choice that keeps the experience fresh and avoids the mental grind that loop courses sometimes bring.
One of the standout aspects of the Stub Stewart Trail Challenge is its flexibility. Registration pricing is the same regardless of distance, allowing runners to adjust their plans on race day. Feeling a little rough? Stop after fewer loops. Feeling great? Keep stacking them and see how far the legs will take you.
As with all Bivouac Racing events, this is a cupless race, so runners should bring their own hydration vessel. Water and electrolytes will be available at the two aid stations along the course. Participants should also plan to cover the $10 Stub Stewart State Park parking fee.
After finishing, stick around for post-race food, beer, and a chance to score some swag. All finishers will head home with a Bivouac Racing mug to commemorate the day.
