Run Oregon Test Kitchen: DEFI Snacks

For years, I thought of snacks as a kind of punishment—something that reflected a weak mind (and stomach). Nowadays, I see that was mostly a fool’s errand. Depriving yourself doesn’t really accomplish much except setting yourself up for failure and self-loathing.

That said, I do think we can be mindful about what we eat. For me, enjoying a handful or two of jellybeans is an indulgence I no longer beat myself up over. Eating an entire Halloween-size bag, however? That’s something my body reminds me of—mostly in the form of an upset stomach.

What I’m getting at is this: satisfying a craving—smartly—can actually be a healthy part of overall wellness. So, when we heard about DEFI Snacks, we were intrigued. I mean… their bags even have runners on them!

Background

DEFI Snacks is a female-founded brand, created by Ukrainian-born entrepreneur Tatyana Jones. What makes it stand out is a snack that’s packed with high protein and superfood-infused chocolate bites—treats that satisfy immediately while also fueling your body over time.

And the secret ingredient? Buckwheat.

When I paused to think about buckwheat, I realized I couldn’t really describe or define it in a way that made it sound… exciting. Just the name—buckwheat—doesn’t exactly make anyone think, “Wow, I can’t wait to eat my buckwheat tonight!

But maybe that’s about to change.

Flavors and Availability

The health benefits of buckwheat are impressive—fiber and plant compounds with antioxidants that support heart health and help regulate blood sugar levels. What’s remarkable is that DEFI Snacks manages to pack in all those benefits while keeping the flavors satisfying and accessible.

The Bottom Line (So Far)

So, these are perhaps going to be a bit of an acquired taste – there’s no getting around it. If you are used to (and crave) the super sweet flavorings of mass-produced chocolates, you aren’t going to find that here. I suppose that shouldn’t be unexpected, however. There’s a bit of an initial sweet quick, but the buckwheat took some getting used to for me. It’s not bad, just different.

I tell you what it did though – and that’s limit the consumption a little bit and satisfy that sweet tooth I had. I have rarely wanted to eat more than 2 of these at a time – which is obviously good as crushing a bag’s worth of any treat really outpaces any of the benefits you were hoping to get in the first place.

Each 4 oz. pouch contains about 8 snacks. At roughly $15 per bag (less if you subscribe or purchase more), they aren’t cheap—but as a more mindful snack option—one you’re not devouring by the handful—they’re a manageable splurge. Honestly, while I could theoretically crush a whole bag, I found them especially useful after a run, when I wanted just a little sweetness to cap off my workout. Eating 1–2 at a time makes the price nearly equivalent to what you’d spend on far less nutritious, mass-produced chocolate bars.
