Take a Hike, the HOKA Way: HOKA Mafate X Hike

As someone who runs a fair amount—road, trail, and everything in between—I’m always humbled when I trade my running shoes for hiking boots. Running half marathons? Manageable. But a 13-mile hike with friends? That can feel like an eternity.

Hiking demands muscles and movements that running rarely touches: stabilizing with your core, bracing with your upper body, and sliding sideways on uneven ground. And just like running, having the right footwear can make or break the experience.

That’s why the Hoka Mafate X Hike immediately caught my attention. If HOKA can bring its trail-running DNA into a hiking boot, sign me up.

Looks

Holy cow—these stand out.

The retro-meets-futuristic design is bold enough already, but throw in the Citrus and Alabaster colorway, and you’ve got a boot that turns heads on the trailhead. Not everyone is going to love the loud palette, but if you’re the kind of person who likes your gear to make a statement, you’ll be grinning every time you lace these up. Personally, I can’t stop staring at them.

Performance & Tech

The Mafate name is already familiar to trail runners (check out our earlier review of the Mafate X running shoe). The hiking version borrows from that same playbook—signature HOKA cushion underfoot and even a snappy carbon fiber plate—but adds in hiker-specific details:

  • Neoprene collar for a supportive, secure fit higher up the ankle.
  • Speed hooks for quick, customizable lacing.
  • Built-in RECCO reflector—a small but meaningful feature if you’re ever in a situation where searchability matters.

In short: HOKA took their hyper-cushioned ride and gave it trail-hike toughness.

Fit & Feel

Sliding into the Mafate X Hike feels surprisingly familiar if you’ve ever run in HOKA. The cushioning is plush without being sloppy, and the carbon fiber plate adds a touch of snappiness you don’t normally find in hiking boots. The neoprene collar hugs the ankle for extra security without feeling restrictive, and the speed hooks make dialing in the fit quick and intuitive.

What really stands out is the stability. Even though these have HOKA’s signature stack, the wide platform and structured upper help keep you steady on uneven ground. For long hauls, that combo of cushion + support means your feet stay fresher deeper into the day.

Overall

The Mafate X Hike is exactly what I hoped a HOKA boot would be—comfortable, bold, and purpose-built for long days outside. Hiking might always feel harder than running for me, but at least now the miles will feel a whole lot softer underfoot.
