PackIt Newport Cooler Review: A Chill Companion for Active Days

Oregonians like to get out and after it. Most of us, at least. I don’t know about you, but as the work week winds down, I’m always on the lookout for new places to run, explore, or just soak in some sunshine. And when you’re constantly chasing movement, meals and hydration have to follow.

Sure, I love supporting local restaurants and breweries while exploring, but let’s be real—you can only do that so often before your budget starts to sweat. That’s why I try to pack at least one meal or drink when I head out. It keeps costs down only if the food is still edible after hours in a hot car. No one’s excited about a wilted sandwich or lukewarm electrolyte drink or post-run celebration beer.

One product that’s become a go-to this summer is the PackIt Freezable Newport Cooler. It’s already logged plenty of miles with me—on trails, in the car, and parked at picnic tables.

Construction & Design

At first glance, the Newport Cooler is simple. But once you use it, you realize how clever it is. It’s a 9.9-liter soft cooler that folds down compactly to store in your freezer. The interior walls are lined with a freezable gel—no ice packs needed. Just fold it flat, freeze it overnight, and it’s ready to chill your food or drinks for hours.

The size is just right: not bulky, but definitely roomy enough. It can hold up to 16 cans, which makes it plenty big for lunch, snacks, and drinks—even if you’re packing for a few. Inside, there’s a zippered mesh pocket to help keep things organized. Personally, I like to stash a couple of Tupperware containers and a Hydro Flask in the main compartment, with granola bars or trail mix up top in the mesh area.

Relay-Ready Cooling

If you’re in the running or ultra community, you know the value of a cold drink or meal after a big leg. Especially during summer relay season, the Newport Cooler has been a low-key game-changer. When you’ve just logged 10 hot, dusty miles, lukewarm water or a soggy sandwich isn’t going to cut it.

This cooler keeps everything at a satisfying, chilled temperature for hours—which makes it perfect for runners fueling between legs, or support crews staying stocked without constantly searching for ice.

Family-Friendly Flexibility

Outside of running, I’ve also put the Newport Cooler to the test with my family of five. It’s been just as useful on our non-running days—at soccer games, beach afternoons, and impromptu hikes to picnic spots. With both a top handle and a crossbody strap, it’s easy to carry even when it’s fully packed.

And once you’re done, it folds back down neatly, saving space in your car or gear closet.

Final Thoughts

If you’re someone who thrives on movement and needs a reliable way to keep food and drinks cool along the way, the Newport Cooler is a smart, budget-friendly addition to your lineup. Throw it in the freezer, toss it your trunk, and it’s ready to roll whenever you are. It’s simple, it works, and it’ll quietly earn its keep every time you find yourself craving something cold after chasing miles, chasing kids, or just chasing the sun.
