When I used to think of Merino wool, I always associated it with cold weather gear. I mean, doesn’t your mind jump to images of sipping wine by the fireplace, wrapped in a cozy wool sweater or blanket? It’s an outdated way of thinking for many runners, but I’d bet a lot of people still primarily connect wool with winter running gear.
Over the years, I’ve been learning just how versatile Merino wool really is. It’s quick-drying, has excellent temperature regulation, offers solid UV protection, and naturally fights off odors—basically, all the things you want in warm-weather gear.
Ibex recently sent over their Paradox Short Sleeve Tee (formerly called their Merino Tencel Collection), and I’ve been putting it through its paces.
First impressions?
While this is more of a casual shirt than a running shirt, the light weight is quite amazing. Obviously having the two natural performance fibers in blend make it a nice combo of function, fit, and quality. It’s easy to see why the Paradox Tee is one of Ibex’s bestselling shirts.
While it has roots in the casual lifestyle sphere, there’s really not a reason to believe this couldn’t be used on a run. It is light and loose-fitting, and through the handful of times I have worn and washed this – including a few times during both strength training and running workouts, I have not noticed any stink come up yet. During runs, it wicks moisture efficiently, keeping me dry without that clammy feeling some synthetic shirts can cause.
And post-run? It doesn’t hold onto odors like typical running shirts—a huge bonus if you’re someone who likes to re-wear gear before washing (no judgment here). I have worn to work in the yard on one day, followed by a light workout on the next day. In that circumstance, I didn’t even have a second thought (or need a second whiff) about tossing it on again.
The Paradox Tee definitely comes at a higher price than what you might usually spend on a shirt, but the quality and durability make it a solid investment. It feels well-constructed, built to last, and—most importantly—doesn’t develop that dreaded locked-in running smell that usually forces us to retire gear prematurely.
Plus, with the spring launch, it’s available in four heathered colors that look great as well.
