The world of sunglasses is fascinating. While everyone needs a pair to protect their eyes and maintain good vision in the sun, the concept is more complex than it seems. Some people need a cheap and simple pair to keep on hand, while others prioritize style. For those with active lifestyles, enhanced features become crucial. There are numerous options to consider: different types of lenses, nose pads, sizes, and functionalities. The variety is both interesting and overwhelming.
Personally, I have accumulated a variety of sunglasses over the years. I own some super inexpensive ones that I can wear in settings where I don’t particularly care if they get lost or scratched, such as at the pool. I also have some mid-range pairs in certain colorways that I like to match with different seasons. Now, thanks to SMITH Optics and their Shift Split MAG Sport Sunglasses, I have one of the most technologically advanced pairs out there.
Before jumping into this, I think it’s important to highlight that SMITH has created some of the best sunglasses I’ve ever tried. Each of their pairs offers a unique experience while maintaining consistent quality. They reliably produce what they promise and do an excellent job at it. Generally speaking, SMITH prioritizes quality, which means their sunglasses typically fall into the premium category. While this may not suit everyone’s preferences, we can attest that what you get in return is truly top-notch.
The name of this specific pair is a bit of a tongue twister. The Smith Shift Split MAG combines a variety of features: a split frame design and the ability to quickly interchange lenses using their Smith MAG system, which employs a magnetic clip design. Together, these elements create the innovative Smith Shift Split MAG.
Looks and Fit:
In our pictures, you’ll see that we chose the Black + ChromaPop Photochromic Clear to Gray. It’s a pretty basic choice, but I opted for this route because I often tend to go flashier and more flamboyant than necessary. This colorway offers a more straightforward look that pairs well with almost anything. However, an alternate version of myself would be drooling over the other seven colorways, some of which definitely fit that flamboyant descriptor.
This pair features a robust lens design. Depending on your face size, this may or may not be your desired look. They list the measurements for each pair on their website, and while this is listed as “Medium” – it seems pretty maximal in its coverage. Personally, I love larger sizes for running because they cover almost all of my field of vision. This makes it so that glancing down at my feet on shaded and rooted trails doesn’t change the lighting and shading abilities.
Even with a maximized frame, these glasses are super lightweight. They don’t weigh on the nose or ears but still feel secure when running at any speed. As usual, the Megal nose pad is top-notch, providing a no-slip grip without causing headaches or pinching. The nose pad can be adjusted into a couple of different positions for a more optimal fit. Additionally, there is some grip on the arms, offering a bit more security on the sides of the head.
Technology:
In all likelihood, you’re not coming to Run Oregon for a full in-depth technological analysis of sunglasses. There are plenty of websites, including SMITH itself, that do that way better than we ever could. So instead let’s talk about these lenses from a basic standpoint.
Smith offers four different types of lenses, but this pair features the ChromaPop Photochromic lenses. These lenses enhance color contrast and clarity while automatically adjusting to varying light conditions. This ensures that runners can see more clearly and with greater detail, improving their overall running experience and safety.
We have used ChromaPop lenses before, and honestly, they are near the top of our list. The colors pop overall (hence the name), thanks to their ability to enhance their qualities in differing light conditions. This makes them ideal for trail runners who frequently transition between shaded canopies and open areas, as well as for Oregonian runners who can start a run in the sun only to have the sky turn overcast shortly afterward.
It’s pretty cool that these lenses work due to a chemical reaction when exposed to UV sunlight. The chemicals in the lenses adjust the shading based on the amount of sunlight, ensuring optimal visibility. This immediate and adaptive adjustment is quite awesome and makes these sunglasses a great choice for any runner.
As far as adjustment goes, the AutoLock hinges make it super simple to replace the lenses. See above. So easy!

The price is, well, substantial—over $300 is nothing to sneeze at. However, we want to highlight a few things. First, as we’ve discussed, the quality is outstanding. This makes the price point much more manageable and ensures you’ll be covered for years to come.
