Load your running shoes, socks, and sunscreen in your fanny pack for the 5th annual Bare Buns Fun Run at the Mountaindale Sun Resort in North Plains, on Sunday, August 7th. This clothing optional 5k is part of the family oriented nudist resort’s yearly Sun Fest.
It would be a derrière-eliction of my duties if I didn’t include some puns, so bare with me while I expose my enthusiasm for cheeky humor. You are not required to run the race sans attire, so don’t be afraid of making an ass of yourself or being the butt of jokes. My own nude running experience is limited to streaking through our arch-rival’s library with my college cross-country team, so I’m no expert, but even if you do choose to doff your garb, friends who have run these events assure me everyone is supportive and non-judgemental.
The course is on trails and is a hilly one, and the naked truth is the race should prove quite challenging. It’s not called “Mountaindale” for nothing! From bottom to top, expect a lot of elevation gain and loss. Adrenaline will carry you through the start and finish, so make sure to save your strength for the backside of the course.
Awards for top finishers, a chance to win raffle prizes, and – ironically – T-shirts are all included in the entry fee. The resort also encourages runners to stay for the festival. “Race participants and guests coming for the weekend may participate in the Sun Fest activities including live music, dinner and dance party, vendors, sports, and a variety of activities.”
A friend has run several bare buns runs in the past, including a favorite trio of races, and his goal is to win all three in the same calendar year. Similar to horse racing’s Triple Crown or tennis’s Grand Slam, this feat is known as the “Winning Streak”.
The race starts mid-morning, so you don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn. In addition to socks, shoes, sunscreen, and a lack of embarrassment (or in this case, em-bare-ass-ment), bringing a towel is recommended, for sitting, and for use at the pool and spa post-race. Parking is limited, so carpooling is also highly encouraged!
