Branching Out: Why the Run for the Oaks is a Must-Run

Several years back, I was invited out to Left Coast Cellars in Rickreall and had a great time enjoying the wine and the estate. The owner took me on a tour of the property and gave me the scoop on the Run for the Oaks, and I’ve meant to come back and run it ever since.

This year is the 9th annual year of the Run for the Oaks 5k/10k and it’s worth the trek out to Rickreall to participate. For one, you should feel good about the fact that your race entry fee will be devoted to the Oak Savanna Restoration Project.

See our recap of the event here!

Through a partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and NRCS, this race will help provide funding for over 100 acres of old growth oak forest. The forest is a permanent wildlife refuge for native plants, wildlife, birds, and insects.

The cost of the race is $50 for the 5k and $60 for the 10k, and that will not only help this project, but also cover the cost of a race shirt, a GoVino wine glass, and a glass of wine.

Runners will find themselves mostly on rolling gravel roads and there are both trail and paved segments. You’ll also get an opportunity to travel through the vineyards and see views of those old growth oak savannas your entry fee is helping to protect.

Pick up your packet the day before the race on Friday August 1st at the Tasting Room. There will be live music from 4:30PM to 7:30PM and it’s a great way to unwind before your event. If you can’t make it then, you can come to the race start at 7:00AM and get your packet then. The 10k race starts at 8:30AM and the 5k begins a half hour later at 9:00AM.

After the race, stick around for some wine tasting. You’re at a winery after all! There will also be live music and an awards ceremony.
