Achilles Heel: The La Sportiva Prodigio’s Highs and Lows on the Trail

In June of 2022, the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) released a survey of 9,514 runners in 104 countries that revealed the most worn brands and trends among trail runners. In that survey, La Sportiva ranked as the 3rd most worn brand (Salomon was 1st and Hoka was 2nd). For some, this is no surprise. For others, like myself – with limited experience in La Sportiva footwear – I was intrigued. We recently checked out the La Sportiva Prodigio – a new launch in their trail lineup.

Looks:

In an industry where bold colors and flashy designs are the norm, the Prodigio offers a simple, no-fuss look. Available in several colorways, the Prodigio caters to those who prefer understated tones as well as those seeking something a bit more unique.

My pair came in all black with subtle red accents—not my first choice for flair (the Antique White version is calling me), but it’s a classic and versatile look that appeals to runners who appreciate a quieter style. The shoe features minimal branding, with La Sportiva’s logo on the side and some simple designs around the laces, keeping the aesthetic cohesive and clean.

Fit & Construction:

The Prodigio stands out as a shoe that doesn’t follow the “more is more” approach. It has a narrow fit that hugs the foot securely, particularly around the midfoot and toes. If you typically prefer a roomier shoe or have wide feet, you might want to look elsewhere. However, the snug fit is a major win for anyone who values stability on rugged terrain.

The shoe is impressively light, making it feel almost like an extension of your foot—a second layer rather than a bulky add-on. I’d recommend sizing up by at least half a size to accommodate the narrow structure, especially if you want a bit of breathing room.

Upper:

The Prodigio’s upper is a snug fit dream, though it could feel a bit too tight for those who like a looser feel. Even with minimal tightening of the laces, it stays secure – I almost feel like I could run without tightening. The upper construction is complemented by a gusseted tongue, but the tongue itself feels a bit short (something we are seeing more and more regularly across the running shoe landscape) and uses thin foam padding as well. While it doesn’t interfere with overall comfort, it might not satisfy everyone.

The heel cup offers rigidity with thin padding, giving good structure but minimal softness, which may lead to some discomfort on hills. The high collar can bite at the ankle on inclines, so if you’re planning for steep trails, consider how this might impact your comfort over longer distances. In fact, this is the single most significant complaint about this shoe.

I didn’t experience it when taking on flat casual trails (i.e. those at Willamette Mission State Park), but on the handful of short test runs I did on some incline, I definitely felt discomfort. It’s a really solid shoe, but this design seems to be a real challenge for a large amount of people. I think you could cut it down a little with thicker socks and sizing up, but that may not be everyone’s jam.

Midsole:

The shoe feels lower to the ground than its stack would suggest. Regardless, its nicely cushioned and the Prodigio’s nitrogen-infused midsole delivers an impressive level of comfort without compromising on feel. This model actually boasts more cushioning than any previous La Sportiva trail shoe, making it their most trail-friendly choice yet.

Outsole:

La Sportiva’s reputation in climbing and rock surfaces shines through in the Prodigio’s outsole. While it may not have the brand’s grippiest rubber, it provides excellent traction for most terrains, with near full coverage for maximum grip. Whether you’re on dry or mixed conditions, the Prodigio’s outsole should keep you moving confidently without slipping.

Overall:

At $155, the La Sportiva Prodigio is a well-priced option for runners who want a minimalist, lightweight, and durable trail shoe without sacrificing too much cushioning. It’s not for everyone—the snug fit, the possibility of heel collar irritation, and straightforward style might not appeal everyone. But for the right runner, the Prodigio delivers a unique mix of protection, ground feel, and grip, making it an excellent choice for tackling rugged trails with confidence.
