Stay Warm, Run Far: Smartwool’s Active Fleece Gear

Advertisements

Cold-weather runs can hold a unique charm for me. Some of my most special runs include miles on snow-dusted trails and streets or under crisp, blue – yet literally freezing – skies. For many of us, bundling up for chilly conditions is a fair trade for the exhilaration of a winter run.

However, the element that often stops me at the door is wind. Cold is manageable, but when combined with gusty conditions, it can feel impossible to warm up or feel like you want to spend any time outside.

Smartwool’s running collection is more than just cold-weather gear—it’s crafted to support you wherever your feet take you. Designed with runners in mind, each piece prioritizes comfort and thoughtful construction.

Designed for runners facing cold, windy conditions, this collection includes a 1/2 Zip Top and Tights that provide excellent wind protection without sacrificing mobility.

  • Main Body: 47% Polyester, 38% Merino Wool, 15% Elastane
  • Overlay: 85% Nylon, 15% Elastane
  • Pockets: 100% Polyester

This 1/2 Zip stands out from other tops I’ve worn, both in construction and functionality. The front features a windproof panel (rated at 1 CFM) that protects the entire upper body from cold gusts.

While this adds a bit of weight compared to some lighter running options, the tradeoff is well worth it for the warmth and comfort it offers. And since precipitation is often paired with wind in the Pacific Northwest, the DWR finish was a welcome addition to repel light moisture.

Aside from the core construction, Smartwool has added thoughtful details like thick thumbholes to keep warmth in and soft-brushed Merino wool for a cozy, next-to-skin feel. The fit is more relaxed, allowing room for light layering underneath, and it’s versatile enough to be worn casually on winter days.

Plus, reflective elements enhance visibility for those early morning or evening runs.

Active Fleece Wind Tight

  • Main Body: 47% Polyester, 38% Wool-Merino, 15% Elastane
  • Overlay Panel: 85% Nylon, 15% Elastane
  • Lining: 53% Wool-Merino, 47% Lyocell

The tights are an ideal match for the 1/2 Zip, with a slim, body-hugging fit that provides warmth without restricting movement. Like the top, they feature the same windproof front panel (1 CFM rating) and soft-brushed Merino, so they’re comfortable against the skin and flexible enough for a range of motion.

Practical design elements enhance the tights’ usability, including ankle zippers, a secure zip pocket at the back, a side drop-in pocket, and reflective accents. They stayed warm and comfortable through several winter runs, and I even wore them for the Ducks vs. Maryland game on 11/9—a test in itself even though we all know that it never rains at Autzen Stadium!

Final Thoughts

For runners who brave unpredictable and often windy weather, the Smartwool Active Fleece Wind Collection is a fantastic investment. These items provide excellent wind protection, warmth, and comfort, making them especially suitable for the Pacific Northwest or the Oregon Coast. Well-constructed and thoughtfully designed, I’d highly recommend them for any runner looking to tackle cold, windy runs this season.
