From Trails to Tides: Mixing Running and Exploration at the Maui Ocean Center

Advertisements
A trip to the Hawaiian Islands for Oregonians often means relaxing, indulging in Hawaiian food and tropical drinks, and perhaps squeezing in some sweaty, sunny runs. While we’re here for all that, don’t overlook the Maui Ocean Center—Maui’s fantastic aquarium. It offers a refreshing break from the usual beach vibes, giving you a chance to explore the island’s incredible marine life and learn about local conservation efforts.

First, the Running:

Outside of the myriad of trails up (and up and up!) in the Haleakala National Park area, I feel I have run most of the best locations in Maui. Here are a few of my favorites that are close to the Maalaea Harbor.

Racing!

We’ve been in contact with the Maui Ocean Center over the past few months and discovered that they also organize the Maui 5K each March. If you’re in town during this time of year, it’s definitely worth checking out! The 5K course is likely to be both beautiful and windy, given that Māʻalaea is the world’s second windiest harbor—a fact that was made very clear during our visit.

The course is a lollipop-style out-and-back that starts near the harbor and heads east along Highway 310 for about a mile before looping back. Expect solid views of Māʻalaea Bay on the way out and the West Maui Forest Preserve on the return. However, this could be one of the toughest 5Ks you’ll experience, with at least half the race likely facing a strong headwind or crosswind (though the other half should be easier). Running this route on non-race days isn’t recommended due to the highway’s conditions.

The Experience:

After a day of running and needing a little bit of reprieve from soaking up the sun, a visit to the Maui Ocean Center was a great way to unwind and do something a little different. I last came here a few years ago with my then 4-year-old, but we returned this year with the entire family.

There is something for everyone, from young kid-friendly options to the teenage crowd like Shark Dive Maui and the Humpbacks of Hawaiʻi Exhibit & Sphere. The 3D experience, where you can immerse yourself in the majestic world of humpback whales, truly felt like a recovery session for the soul, much like a runner’s high after a great trail.

The exhibits at the Maui Ocean Center are as diverse as any runner’s terrain. From the Turtle Lagoon (which we spent a ton of time at) to the Living Reef exhibit, teeming with marine life, to the 750,000 gallon Open Ocean exhibit left us taking in so much and enjoying the heck out of it.

Commitment to Conservation

What impressed me most was the center’s dedication to conservation. Hawaiians, rightfully so, are committed to keep their blue waters fresh and marine life abundant. On a related scale, it sort of parallels the mindfulness that most of us strive for as runners, taking care of the trails and environment (stop throwing your gel packets on the ground people!). Programs like their Honu Hero Beach Cleanup are not only impactful but offer a great way to give back to the island that provides us with such beautiful running paths.

Overall

In summary, my visit to the Maui Ocean Center was not just a day of learning about marine life; it was an experience that resonated with my love for running and the outdoors. Whether you’re cooling down after a run or seeking inspiration for your next trail, this place is a must-visit.
