Hauntingly Good – Brooks Ghost Max 2 Review

Advertisements

Let’s talk a bit about Brooks as a running shoe brand. Known for their consistent quality, Brooks has built a reputation as a reliable choice for runners. They’ve been one of the more consistent brands out there, delivering shoes that runners can trust to perform. They generally stick with what works (not always a bad thing).

Though there are TONS of great and beautiful Limited-Editions – like their holiday and Run Proud options – they aren’t sometimes seen as innovative (on a year-by-year basis) as some others out there.

New and Awesome – the Brooks Ghost Max delivers

But that has changed and some of our favorite shoes over the past year or so have been Brooks.  The Brooks Ghost Max 2 joins this group as well, proving that Brooks can combine their signature reliability with fresh, groundbreaking features.

Looks:

Generally, Brooks shoes aren’t known for their flashy looks; they tend to have a classic running shoe appearance. The Ghost Max 2, however, offers a refreshing change with four colorways at launch that are actually quite fun. While still relatively simple – focusing on blues, blacks, and whites – the “speckled” upper adds a touch of flair—especially in the Pelican/Pelican/Black version. The Moroccan Blue/Aqua/Orange Pop variant has also grown on me over the past few weeks and is quite enjoyable.

Construction:

Smartly, Brooks retained most of the successful components of the Ghost Max. The geometry remains the same (with a little bit more weight added), but a few construction updates have been made as well.

Upper:

The upper hasn’t changed drastically but does provide a bit more structure near the middle of the shoe and should be more breathable (and a teeny bit heavier perhaps) due to the double jacquard mesh. The sidewalls have been raised slightly for added stability, which is a good idea given the 39mm/33mm stack height. Our reviewer of the first version didn’t mention any breathability issues, and I’ve found none in this newer version either, suggesting the modifications are relatively slight. The rear collar is particularly nice, offering a secure fit.

Note that this is a generally “bulkier” shoe. I have a standard foot and felt it was roomy enough without going overboard. However, I do wonder if those with lower volume feet will feel like they are swimming a little in this one. My guess is that those runners may need to get creative with lacing and lockdown. However, I think most runners aren’t gonna have an issue here.

Midsole:

One of the biggest updates in this version is the modification and upgrade of the midsole. I love this for us (cue Schitt’s Creek). The original DNA Loft v2 compound has been updated to the DNA Loft v3—a super-critical nitro-infused foam. This is the same foam used in the Glycerin and Caldera, both of which I absolutely loved.

This midsole delivers that coveted “walking on clouds” sensation without feeling marshmallow soft (which hurts my feet). It offers a nice amount of energy return and, when coupled with the GlideRoll Rocker, it goes beyond just comfort and propels you forward and ensures a smooth stride. I anticipated a dense feel to the shoes, but the rocker really pairs well with the midsole and I felt way more pushed forward than I thought I would feel – which was nice! The base also seems a bit wider.

Overall, the midsole provides a bit more softness and energy return and – to date – is probably the pinnacle in Brooks arsenal (and maybe across the running shoe spectrum). I really do love the DNA Loft v3 feel.

Outsole:

The outsole remains relatively unchanged, which is a good thing. The grip is ample and solid.

Overall:

The Ghost Max 2 is an excellent choice for runners seeking a smooth and straightforward running experience. While it may not be the fastest option due to its weight and construction, it offers a remarkably smooth and easy ride. We feel most runners looking for a shoe in this category will likely be very satisfied with its performance and with the simple upgrades.
