GU: The Original Gel That Still Gets It Done

We’re all familiar with energy supplements when we’re out running—powders, hydration mixes, gels. There’s more out there now than ever before, and while that’s mostly a good thing (variety, innovation, better ingredients), it can also make it tough to know what to trust. For most of us, it’s been a bit of trial and error along the way.

If we’re being honest, a lot of our entry into the energy gel world probably started with GU Energy.

It really was the OG. To the point where “GU” basically became (and maybe still is) generic shorthand for any gel you stuffed into your pocket before a run. Didn’t matter the brand—if it was a packet of quick carbs, it was “a GU.”

Fast forward to now, and the space is crowded with competition. New brands, new formulas, and plenty of alternatives. Still, GU remains one of the main players—and for good reason.

Not everyone loves GU, but it’s hard to argue with its consistency. Most runners who’ve used it have a pretty clear understanding of how their body responds, which is a big deal when you’re fueling mid-run. The packaging is easy to open, the texture is familiar, and the flavors—more often than not—are solid and true to what they claim.

One of their newer flavors, Sour Peach, is a great seasonal addition heading into spring and summer. It’s not overwhelmingly sour (which is probably for the best—no one wants to be puckering at mile 10 of a long run). Instead, it lands closer to a mellow tartness—think peach ring candy. A little tang, mostly sweet, and easy to take down when the weather warms up.

Of course, GU is more than just gels at this point. Their lineup has expanded quite a bit over the years and now includes:

They also offer variety packs, which are a solid way to test out different flavors and formats without committing to a full box of anything.

At the end of the day, GU may not be the only or flashiest option on the market anymore, but it remains one of the most reliable. And in a category where predictability and stomach comfort matter just as much as performance, that still counts for a lot.
