Glide On: Salomon Aero Glide 4

If you’re anything like us, the name Salomon probably conjures images of mountaineering gear, snowboards, or their legendary trail shoes and hydration vests. Over the years, we’ve tested a few of their road shoes, but the one that really got us dialed in on Salmon was recent additions to the Aero Glide and Aero Blaze series.

See all our posts on Salomon here!

The launch of the Salomon Aero Glide 4, piggy backs off of a version 3 that we really enjoyed and provides some refinements that keeps Salomon inching along.

Looks

When we unboxed the Aero Glide 3, I remember audibly thinking, “finally—a Salomon road shoe that actually looks like a road shoe”. The Aero Glide 4 carries that same vibe forward—clean, streamlined, and unmistakably road-ready.

As for color… well, this is where it gets tricky. Our V3 review pair was gray, and I remember wishing for a little more pop. Now, here I am staring at the “Blueing/White” version—a colwoway FULL of pop with an intriguing mix of blue-almost-purple with subtle pink accents—and suddenly I’m flirting with wishing for more neutral territory. I’m not sure what’s wrong with me – identity crisis or something.

Thankfully, looks are subjective (and we never knock review sample colorways anyways), and Salomon gives you options: four colorways mean there’s something for everyone—whether you’re bold, subdued, or somewhere in the wishy-washy middle like me.

Construction and Fit

The Aero Glide series—and thus the Aero Glide 4—has a single-minded goal: maximum cushion with minimal weight. With a 41 mm heel / 33 mm forefoot stack and tipping the scales at around 8.8 oz (depending on size), Salomon nails that balance. In the world of high-cushion, lightweight road shoes, this lands squarely in what we’d call the Super Trainer category—a class defined by premium midsoles.

What’s impressive is that Salomon achieves this without drawing too much attention or hitting a stratospheric price point. The ride feels plush underfoot, responsive enough to push pace without ever feeling harsh. That said, the 8 mm drop might not suit every runner—if you’re coming from lower-drop shoes, it could take some adjustment.

Specs

Upper

This version also introduces an intriguing new construction detail—one that I’ll admit I’m not entirely smart enough to fully unpack. Salomon explains it as:

“Comfort is also improved with the Aero Glide 4’s innovative inside-out construction. By integrating reinforcements directly into the engineered mesh, the upper wraps the foot like a second skin. The result is a more breathable, seamless fit that reduces pressure points, dries quickly, and adapts naturally to the runner.”

I’ll be honest—I’m still trying to figure out exactly what that means in product design. While it sounds promising (who doesn’t want a breathable fit that reduces pressure!?), I had a small worry that the “second skin” fit might lose part of what I liked about the V3: its combination of comfort and accessibility.

Long story short, I did not find this to be as second skin – in a good way. It feels pretty dialed in, but didn’t feel like anything other than a solid pair of running shoes.

Midsole

The midsole continues to deliver that signature Aero Glide feel—one we think more runners should experience. Salomon’s supercritical optiFOAM² strikes a rare balance: comfortable yet responsive, soft underfoot but never mushy. It’s the kind of midsole you run in, forget about while you’re on the road, and then realize afterward just how nice it was.

Adding to this is Salomon’s “reverseCAMBER geometry”— a fancy name for their rocker technology. Borrowed conceptually from ski design (makes sense for a company rooted in outdoor sports), it smooths transitions from heel to toe and I found it to work quite well midsole.

The result is a fluid, almost effortless stride that feels intuitive from the first step. Again, this is the kind of ride you don’t think about mid-run—but you definitely comment positively on after. Honestly, I keep returning to this shoe time and time again – even when I have to get to other reviews!

Outsole

Salomon outsoles have rarely disappointed, and the Aero Glide 4 continues that tradition. The design features a relatively unique complete loop of grip running around the shoe’s perimeter, with a modified construction across the forefoot and a deeper cutout channel through the midfoot and heel. In everyday use traction is solid and predictable and the shoe feels stable underfoot.

The only minor caveat: on very varied terrain that can trap pebbles or loose gravel, some debris might lodge in the cutout sections. But for the vast majority of road running conditions, the outsole is low-drama and gets the job done.

Conclusion

The Aero Glide 4 proves that Salomon can continue to build a road shoe that’s both plush and purposeful, delivering a ride that’s easy to love without overthinking.
