As much as I love getting out into the world, putting in miles, and being one with nature, the reality is that even more time goes into front of a computer screen—crafting content for Run Oregon, organizing race coverage, reviewing gear, and trying to make it all accessible and meaningful. First world problem, I know, but it’s something I’m very aware of.
I’ve tried a few ways to make my desk setup more tolerable: blue-light-blocking glasses, a decent chair, ergonomic tweaks—but like running, I’m always on the lookout for tools that genuinely set me up for success. That’s where FluidStance’s Loft Laptop Stand comes in. While it’s obviously not running gear, it’s very much in line with what I spend most of my days doing here—building a workspace that works for me.
The Loft Stand is made from powder-coated recycled steel (not cheap plastic), giving it a sleek, modern look without trying too hard. It’s sturdy, functional, and essentially disappears into the background when I’m focused on work—exactly how a good piece of gear should behave. That also means it runs on the heavier side, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing – but if you are constantly moving your workspace from one location to another, it’s not the easiest thing in the world to transport.
Functionally, it’s doing more than just holding my laptop. Even with a good chair, having a laptop on a desk means my gaze is angled downward, adding stress to my neck and shoulders. Raising the screen with the Loft Stand brings it to eye level, reducing tension and making long hours in front of the computer noticeably easier on my body. After a few weeks of consistent use, I can genuinely feel the difference.
Beyond posture, the Loft Stand doubles as an organizational tool. There is a small dry erase board that helps with quick notes (as well as holds rapidly growing sticky notes). The felt-lined bottom also pulls out to store away notebooks and paperwork. For someone whose life—and desk—can get chaotic (and in response – I get more stressed), having a little bit of order is more than appreciated. It’s a small mental win.
The Loft Stand isn’t going to help you shave minutes off your 5K—but in the grand scheme of “performance” in everyday life, it’s like finding the perfect pair of running shoes: it complements your daily routine. For anyone spending serious time at a laptop, it’s a worthy investment in your posture, organization, and overall well-being.
