The Crater Lake Rim Runs are Almost Here!

People are often shocked when I tell them I’ve never been to Crater Lake, but as a native Oregonian, I guess it’s just one of those things I figure I’ll get to “someday.” This is one reason that the Crater Lake Rim Run is on my personal bucket list, because maybe if I signed up for this race, I’d finally get to see the famous Lake that I hear so much about.

This is the 47^th year of the Crater Lake Rim Runs and it takes place, as one would imagine from the name, at beautiful Crater Lake National Park. This is your chance to run the rim of epic Crater Lake. Altitudes range from 5,980 to 7,850 feet above sea level, so this is not a race for the weak. But for all it’s challenge, it’s also equally beautiful, as you’ll be surrounded by breaktaking views among the mountains.

This event takes place on Saturday August 9^th this year and you’ll have a few distances to choose from. There’s a 6.7 mile run, a 13 mile run, and a full marathon. You can also walk the 6.7 mile course if you choose. All races begin at 7:30AM and all take place along the rim. The 6.7 mile course will close at 9:30AM for runners (or 10:00AM for the walkers) and at 10:00AM for the 13 mile run. The Marathon closes at 1:00PM.

There will be aid stations about every 2 miles beginning at 3 miles. There will be electrolytes, water, and sponges to cool off with. Watermelon, soda, and bagels will be waiting at the finish line. There will also be a medical team at Cleetwood Cove (finish line for 6.7 miler) as well as a medical team trailing on the runs and emergency medical and communications at each aid station.

The course is all on paved roads, with the exception of the last 4 miles of the marathon, which is dirt/pumice cinders. There is limited traffic, but as mentioned, there is considerable altitute loss and gains (bearing 1,000 feet at a time over distances nearing 5 miles.) Check out the Course Map here.
