Frosty Footsteps: 2024 PRC Winter 5k Series Kicks Off

I was at the December Winter PRC 5k Race Series. Where were you? This Run With Paula series of three 5ks takes place over three months, and it has become a holiday staple for me. It’s as much a part of winter as decorating our Christmas tree, attending holiday parties, or putting on an ugly sweater. It’s tradition, and Paula always makes sure everyone feels like family.

Since the weather can often be less than inspiring this time of year, it also gives us all a great reason to get up and get moving.

The December 5k was scheduled for the 14th, and the early morning brought some rain and heavy wind. It didn’t really feel like the sort of day where I wanted to leave my warm bed, but I also knew that the only run I’d regret was the one I didn’t do. I got dressed, got in the car, and the sun came out and the most gorgeous rainbow appeared. It was a good omen.

Parking, as always, was simple and the cheery volunteers ushered me right in. Portland Running Company was abuzz with hot beverages, donuts, and cheerful runners and walkers in holiday gear and cute patterns on hats, gloves, and leggings. Everyone was in a good mood.

15 minutes before the race, PRC owner Dave Harkin reminded us we still needed to get out to the starting line, and when we got there, the rain had stopped. Dare I say it wasn’t even all that cold. I had brought gloves but I never needed them, which made it so much easier to take photos.

We took off in perfect winter weather. The course has never changed, but I love that it’s a simple and easy out-and-back route. First runners take off down the Beaverton business neighborhood backroads and eventually they land on the trails of Fanno Creek and the park before turning and heading back the way they came.

Right around the time I was getting comfortable on the paved trails of Fanno Creek, the super speedy runners were coming back from the turnaround and as usual, they were booking it fast! It’s all so motivating, getting to see all those ahead and all those behind, all reaching for a common goal and just getting through the miles.

The finish came faster than I thought it would this time, and it felt good after all the longer races I’ve been doing throughout the year. Heading back to a nice warm store with coffee, hot chocolate, gingerbread cookies, and donuts waiting was a great motivator too.

While enjoying the treats, participants stick around for the raffle of prizes like hats and shirts. I was out the door and headed for home an hour after the race had started, with plenty of time to enjoy family festivities. It’s a great way to start a weekend!

Who’s coming to the next one on January 18th? I can’t wait to see you there!!
