Thule Aion Luggage is an Amazing Sidekick for Runcations and Beyond

It’s Travel Season! And how we get our running gear to our new locations is a must! Check out our review of a few items from Thule!

When I dive into reviewing anything, my starting point tends to orbit around the aspect of “looks”. In this regard, the visual appeal of these pieces resonates with a sense of straightforwardness and classicism. There are no flashy elements that immediately grab attention—no wild colors, no eccentric designs—and we’re completely on board with that. I’m all for prioritizing flash in the guise of functionality instead. And it’s in the realms of function and quality that Thule truly shines, demonstrating a finely-tuned expertise.

While black and brown options are on the table, our review focused on the Dark Slate colorway—a choice distinct enough to carve its own path amidst the sea of options. The Nutria hue, almost a yellow-brown fusion, also makes a notable statement, while the Black iteration caters to those seeking a more traditional, understated elegance.

Functionality for Runners:

Unexpectedly, these two pieces complement each other perfectly, forming an ideal duo.

As mentioned earlier, my travels often entail packing multiple sets of running clothes alongside everything else, resulting in the frustrating routine of borrowing plastic bags from hotels (a practice I despise) to segregate my used running attire from the rest of my belongings. It’s merely a makeshift solution to a persistent problem, and even then, it falls short.

What sets both of these items apart is their keen consideration for travelers like myself. In the Travel Backpack, the back panel unzips fully, mimicking the functionality of a suitcase and revolutionizing the packing experience compared to any other backpack I’ve owned. With the addition of the TPU-lined divider, organization becomes effortless while safeguarding against moisture, odor, or dirt permeating the rest of the bag’s contents. While longer trips may still require a separate luggage piece, this feature makes the backpack ideal for short 1-2 night excursions where a single bag suffices.

Meanwhile, the Spinner takes convenience a step further. Equipped with a compression packing cube boasting an easy-to-clean TPU coating, it’s tailor-made for segregating dirty running clothes from the rest of your belongings. This innovative feature effectively locks in dirt, odor, and moisture, making it a dream come true for running travelers like myself. It can be completely removed as well.

More Details:

In addition to their eco-friendly features, both items boast additional perks worth highlighting.

Travel Backpack:

The Travel Backpack incorporates dedicated compartments for electronics storage and a water bottle pocket—essential for my needs. Its ample zipped compartments ensure belongings remain securely in place without excessive shifting.

Regarding comfort, I found the shoulder straps to be comfortable and supportive, particularly when paired with the adjustable chest strap. Recently, I effortlessly navigated several layovers en route to Orlando without experiencing any discomfort. The inclusion of small, zipped pockets on the shoulder straps is a thoughtful touch, addressing a feature absent in my previous gear. While I do prefer a waist strap, given the backpack’s size, it may not be essential.

Nevertheless, for those carrying heavier loads, the option to add a Thule Aion Sling (available separately) provides added support, doubling as a hip belt for distributing weight and granting quick access to essential items (see the video starting at second 47 here).

Spinner:

It’s been a while since I’ve used a wheeled carry-on, preferring duffel bags for travel, but I’ve come to realize what I’ve been missing out on. Durability in the wheels and handles of luggage has always been a concern for me, but so far, these components seem solid. The rear wheels are slightly larger, enhancing maneuverability across various terrains, from airport floors to roads. While it’s only been a few months since we acquired this piece, they appear to be built to last.

There’s a diverse array of pockets for storing items, some of which are zippered for added security. Moreover, the zippered pockets can be locked together with your own locks for an extra layer of protection—a feature I appreciate, particularly after experiencing a bag theft from the airport carousel a year ago.

Environmental:

Thule deserves praise for its commitment to sustainability, evident in both of these items. The Travel Backpack showcases a commendable use of recycled materials, with its shell fabric, lining, and mesh crafted from 100% recycled materials. Similarly, the Spinner follows suit, with the exception of the polycarbonate back panel, which contains 50% recycled material. It’s worth noting that all Thule Aion products hold bluesign® certification.

Overall:
From this…

For travelers, investing in quality items that serve you well during excursions is invaluable. There’s no sense in adding unnecessary stress to your travels with subpar luggage that leaves you frustrated. While the price tag may be higher, I view these items as long-term investments. They boast durability, versatility, and thoughtful features that are bound to withstand the test of time.

…to this.

This blend of performance and convenience ensures that your running vacations are not only enjoyable but also memorable. By prioritizing quality over quantity, you can rest assured that your travel experiences will be enhanced, making every journey a seamless and satisfying one.
