Run Oregon is Kicking it in the HOKA ONE ONE Mach 5

HOKA ONE ONE shoes have never let me down. I’m so confident in this “go-to” brand that I took the new Mach 5 shoes for a 16 miler after only trying them on for one 6 miler beforehand. I don’t usually break in a new pair of shoes for such a long run, but I knew I could break the rules for HOKA and I was right.

I received the shoes in the Camellia / Peach Parfait color combo and I am really digging it. I love the new bright colors of shoes that are being offered this season. These shoes make you feel happy as soon as you pull them out of the box.

Love these colors!!

The Mach 5 is going to be your “jack (or jill) of all trades” shoe that’s great for everything from an everyday run or for lacing up on race day.  They are sturdy yet lightweight, fitted but comfortable, and neither too ridged nor unsupported.

Though HOKA ONE ONE is known to be one of the cushier shoe brands, the Mach 5 feels pretty lightweight in my opinion. The creel mesh upper is stripped back and the gusseted tongue is a lay-flat style that keeps the dirt out on your run. The PROFLY™ construction in the midsole offers a snappy energy return thanks to the resilient foam and rubberized EVA outsole.

The HOKA website description says that the Mach 5 is “the lovechild of Mach 4 and Mach Supersonic.” I have only tried the Mach 4 previously, but I’ve loved them and these felt just as good. I do feel HOKA ONE ONE shoes often fit a little larger on me than some other brands, with a wider toebox and overall feel, but I still went up a full size from my regular everyday shoe as I typically do for running long distances.

These shoes did not slide around or feel too loose, but they did feel like they had plenty of room as my feet began to swell over the hours of pounding the pavement.  I did trip over them a little on my long run, but that’s not unusual as I get tired and shuffle more. It’s just something to be aware of.

It’s dark when I start my long runs

Overall/For Consideration:

What can I say here except that the HOKA ONE ONE Mach 5 shoes performed as I expected, which means they get an A+. I’ve yet to find myself let down in any HOKA ONE ONE shoes I have tried. The only thing that makes me sad is that I eventually wear them out and then have to say goodbye. Luckily, there’s always a new model around the corner. HOKA shoes aren’t for everyone but everyone I know who’s a fan loves these shoes to the moon and back.

These shoes came just in time for the Portland Marathon, and I look forward to rocking them on October 2nd.
