Have you heard of a little weekend relay in Oregon called Hood To Coast? Unless you’re a runner who’s been hiding under a rock, you’re probably aware of the two-day extravaganza toted as “The Mother of All Relays,” (it IS the largest relay in the world, but no big deal,) but the organization behind the Hood & Portland To Coast Relays has made quite a mark in the running world with their other race events as well.
Runners now have many choices, and some are one-day relays, which are much easier to manage for those with busy lives and/or aversions to too many days in a stinky vans. The most requested location for a relay on the HTC Participant Survey was Hood River, so Race organizers listened and they delivered with the Hood To Coast Windy River Relay which will be on July 23rd this year.
The route will be a 61.4 mile looped course of 12 legs for 4-6 runners or 48.8 miles for 4-6 walkers who will have 8 legs (they start at exchange 4) on the course. The run will take participants from the Hood River Waterfront in downtown Hood River through the orchards with views of the Cascade Mountains and some gorgeous waterways. The loop will begin it’s downhill return to the Columbia River at Tamanawas Falls and Cold Spring Creek near Mt Hood before it ends right where it started, on the banks of the Columbia River. Each leg will vary in distance from 4.2 to 7.9 miles as well as in difficulty. Choose your own adventure and check out the course map and leg assignments on the website.
Your registration fee will get you a Nike Dri-Fit race shirt, some goodies from the sponsors, and an experience you’ll remember forever! All teams will be issued a baton at check in, which will be passed from teammate to teammate throughout the run.
Unlike the original Hood & Portland To Coast Relay, participants will not be require to provide volunteers, so there’s one less worry there! Of course, if you know anyone who wants to volunteer, they are always needed and welcome. Runners love our volunteers since we couldn’t do these races without them.
Be sure to read all the safety and check-in requirements before race day so you can make sure that you have all the supplies you need to participate. As with all Hood To Coast races, there is specific safety equipment that you will need to have with you in order to run the race.
