Just Dune It at the 2022 Siuslaw Dunes 50K & 25K

Our friends at Daybreak Racing are bringing the Siuslaw Dunes back again in 2022 and there are still spots open (it’s also the first in the new Oregon Coast Trail Series! This race is pronounced sigh-YEW-slaw and will be in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (on the coast near Florence, in between Coos Bay and Newport). With both a 50K and 25K option, you’ll certainly get your fill of the dunes with either!

The race website describes both races as a diverse course featuring:

…an assortment of ecological zones, including lush old growth coastal rainforest, riverside estuaries, freshwater lakes, as well as a fascinating transition zone between the dunes and the ocean called the deflation plain, which teems with water-loving plants and animals.

The 25K is a point-to-point course with some forested singletrack, some dunes, and some beaches. It’s more of a 25K+ at 17.2 miles and has about 1,500 feet of climbing. There will be two aid stations in the 25K. All runners in the 25K must ride the shuttle bus to the start line – there will not be parking or drop offs available at the 25K start area. The 50K is not just the 25K twice and has it’s own unique profile! With about 2,750 feet of climbing, and the bulk of that in the middle, paired with the ever-changing terrain, this is going to be a good challenge for any runner. There will be 5 aid stations total for the 50K.

You can check out their race website for course maps and GPX files, race day schedules, accommodation recommendations, etc.

Daybreak Racing events are cupless, so while there will be plenty of electrolyte drinks, water, and soda, be sure to bring your own vessel for refueling! Aid stations will also have gels, bars, fruit, chips, candy…standard ultra fare.

The event beneficiary is Siuslaw High School’s Cross Country and Track & Field programs in Florence, Oregon. Daybreak Racing’s founder and race director, Jeremy, was born and raised in Florence and is an alumni of Siuslaw High. He’s excited to bring runners to his old stomping grounds and be able to give back to his hometown.

Run Oregon knows and loves Daybrack Racing events and can attest to how they are quality, well organized, scenic events. The courses are invariably well marked, the aid stations are always great (and are often mini-parties!) and I haven’t been to a race yet where they didn’t have beer (or chocolate milk) at the finish line. We definitely encourage you to check out their other races throughout the year!
