There are always lots of Turkey Trots on or around Thanksgiving, but one of the best ones is definitely the Hood To Coast Turkey Trot in Portland. What makes this one so special? You get to run at PIR (Portland International Raceway) and view all lights of the Sunshine Winter Wonderland before anyone else!! This is a great way to kick off the transition into the Christmas season.
In case you weren’t aware of it, PIR (the Portland International Raceway) puts on a delightful lightshow on their 2 mile track featuring the 12 days of Christmas. Typically, people have to drive thru the light show, but this race ensures you get to see the whole thing on foot, so you can really take in the experience without cars waiting behind you. In addition to the magic of the lights, there are generally food trucks and some great swag. I don’t know what’s on the plate this year, but in the past, I’ve done this race and scored a mug, a shirt, some bread, and a whole pumpkin pie.
This year’s 5k race will be on November 24th and it will start at 7:00PM. I will STRONGLY advise you to leave extra early for this event, as the lines getting into the raceway are long.
This 5k is extremely family friendly and a great event for a whole group to do together. There’s a FREE kids fun run as well, and it’s just a short out and back. The cost is $35 for the 5k, unless you raise at least $100 in fundraising through Sunshine Division, which will help feed hungry families. Sign up as a fundraiser and all your funds will go directly to this wonderful local non-profit organization. $100 will provide 100 pounds of food for the community in need! If you raise $200, you’ll earn a free ticket to Winter Wonderland, and $500 will get you a skip-the-line VIP ticket.
This race is a great tradition for many that people who look forward to it every holiday season. Many people make this a family affair or do it with friends. Start this tradition this year and get into the magic of the holiday!!
