Race Preview: 2021 Stub Stewart Trail Challenge (Buxton)

Bivouac Racing has been putting on fun races in Oregon’s state parks since 2008, with a current line-up of four events. The first fall race in their state park trail series is the Stub Stewart Trail Challenge on October 17.

Distances at this event include a half marathon and a quarter marathon, and the course presents a variety of terrain that changes frequently to keep things interesting. From the paved Banks-Vernonia trail to unapproved road; from rolling hills to tough climbs, it will keep you guessing! Overall the trails are very runnable, though they can be muddy this time of year.

This is a loop course, with the quarter marathoners running one loop and half marathoners doing two. However the half marathon route will first take you clockwise round the loop, then counterclockwise – you won’t be running the exact same route twice. The team at Bivouac has done a great job planning a race that mixes it up, so if you’re someone with a low tolerance for monotony and boredom this is just the race for you!

Like all Bivouac events and indeed most trail races, this is a cupless event. Water and electrolytes will be available at the two aid stations, but bring your own vessel! Also note that runners are responsible for their $5 parking fee at Stub Stewart (cash, check, and cards accepted).

Stay for food and beer after your race, and the chance to win some swag! All finishers also get a Bivouac Racing mug.

About Heini Tallent (11 Articles)
I'm a sports massage therapist, running coach, and owner of Elements Running Education. I ran track in my native Finland in my teens, but focused on basketball until finally, at the age of 34, I picked up a couch to 5K plan. It snowballed from there: my first 10K, then a half marathon, coaching certification... I've been a runner and a student of running ever since. I love long, slow trail runs and fast 10Ks equally! Having lived in England and California, our family landed in Oregon in 2018. I love all the outdoors adventures in the beautiful PNW.
