Race Preview: 2121 RISE Troops Challenge (Bend)

Ready for boot camp? If you feel a bit like it’s “been there, done that” with races now that you’re up and literally running again, it might be worth considering the 2021 RISE Troops Challenge in Bend. This event, held by Rise Events, will be on October 9th this year and it’s not your typical obstacle race. This event honors those who serve or have served in the military, and the challenges are all based on actual military tactical skills and training challenges.

All of the challenges in this obstacle event are designed for any physical ability, yet they will cater to both the newbie and the veteran. There is training available to prepare you, or you can register with a team to help you out. Everyone can pitch in on a team level.

There are two challenge options, whether you want to participate as an individual or as part of a team. The short course, called the “troops selection,” is the basic challenge course, approximately 3 miles long with 18+ challenges that encompass strength and fitness. This challenge is suitable for beginners and the obstacles, such as the walls, are less advanced. The second challenge option, the long course, is also known as the “troops extended” course, and it will continue on from the short course and move onto a more advanced journey. The long course will have rucking, advanced obstacles, and some Ranger-inspired adventures. Expect about 7 miles total for this event, with 25+ obstacles.  You must bring a ruck or backpack with a minimum weight of 40 lbs for males and 25 lbs for females unless you ask 2 weeks in advance to borrow a sandbag, which will be much more difficult to lug! Weight vests are also fine if you aren’t trying for an award, and all will be weighed before the race starts.

Don’t want to go at this alone? The Troops Team Challenge is for groups of 3-5 members that want to participate together, and the tasks are designed for 4 people regardless of your team size. Entries are discounted for teams and there are a few “team only” challenges. All team members get to start and finish together. Everyone must be 11 or older and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

The short course is $65 per team member and the long course is $75 per team member. It must be a co-ed team to be eligible for an award. If you choose to tackle the course alone, the cost is $70 for the short course and $80 for the whole enchilada, the long course. Military, Police, and Firefighters get a 20% discount. The registration for all participants will cover a finisher t-shirt, a medal, and a celebratory beer from Boneyard Brewing. Register by September 19th to guarantee your t-shirt size!! Also, a minimum of $5 from each entry goes towards the Central Oregon Veterans Outreach (COVO.)

What can you expect out there “in the field?” Think military-style walls, sandbags, carrying heavy things, (ammo-can haul anyone?) crawing through the muck, running, climbing, and even a pull-up fitness test, all in the beauty among the Central Oregon mountains.

The community and camaraderie of this challenge is unmatched. It’s not uncommon to see finishers stick around to cheer on the rest of the participants. Not only that but many veterans and active duty military members come to these events and complete them side by side with the newbies.

After the race, join the “Morale Event” which is just code for the post-race party. There will be food, music, and some beer from Boneyard Brewing. Stick around for the awards ceremony as well!
