The idea of running a 50K trail race near the 3 Sisters might fill you with thoughts of massive climbs and perhaps snow on some of the trails. However, Three Sisters Skyline is one of the most idyllic trails, while offering a very runnable course, almost all on single track, and having far less elevation gain than you think (2,900 feet)… all well below the snow line.
The 50K starts out uphill, but by mile 9.3, it’s all downhill! There’s also a half marathon which boasts a net downhill of 1,500 feet, with only 500 feet of gain, making it very fast for a trail half. Having run all of these trails, they are iconic, to say the least. The views of the mountains are enough to make you stop and take pictures, all while enjoying the high desert for all its beauty.
Alpine Running has been putting on insanely impressive races for a few years now, and their Skyline race is no exception. The race first ran in 2019, with local speedster Ryan Bak setting the course record for the men, while another local rockstar named Camelia Mayfield has won the race 2 years in a row for the ladies.
