Race Preview: 2021 Bridge of the Gods Run (Cascade Locks)

Although the Columbia Gorge is one of the most beautiful areas in the Pacific Northwest, it is such a struggle to get out there. The daily routine is like a black hole that you have to fight against to escape. And signing up for a race is a fantastic way to fight that gravity.

I am so excited to get back to Cascade Locks for the Bridge of the Gods race this August. I participated a few years ago and it was a lovely (and very hilly) adventure. It was one of my slowest half marathons ever because there were just too many beautiful spots that demanded a pause and a photograph. So slow and 1000% worth it.

All three distances (half marathon, 10K, and 5K) begin with participants taking a shuttle bus to the Washington side of the Bridge of the Gods. Race Directors are encouraging folks onto the early bus options with chances at raffle prizes. Plus there are porta-potties and all the needs at the starting line so no need to panic about the necessities.

The course begins runners setting off on the bridge itself to head back into Oregon and along the riverside. Each of the course distances uses the paved trail of Old Highway for an out and back along border. Trees will keep you shaded on one side while you are able to see multiple bridges and the might Columbia on the other.

After starting together, the courses end together for the finish line and after-party at Cascade Locks Marine Park. All finishers earn a tech t-shirt, finishers medal, and a catered lunch to celebrate your accomplishment. And as extra reward for getting out of the routine, runners and walkers are encouraged to enjoy as much of the day in the Gorge as possible.
