Race Preview: 2021 Hagg Lake Triathlon/Duathlon/Half Marathon/5k

If my friend Robyn is reading this, she’s probably having flashbacks at the sight of the word “Hagg Lake.” Running around Hagg Lake in the mud in February (NOT this Why Racing event, BTW) was one of the worst runs she can remember, and it wasn’t made easier by the fact that she turned out to be on the onset of a really bad cold/flu as well. If you like cold and slippery and dirty, February is a great time out at Hagg Lake, but if not, the 2021 Hagg Lake Triathlon on June 5th and 6th will be much more to your liking.

This is the 39th Annual Hagg Lake Triathlon & Off-Road Endurance Sports Festival and it’s going to be epic. Henry Hagg Lake is truly a gorgeous little spot that’s not really all that far off the beaten path if you’re from Portland. This is one of the oldest Triathlons in the nation and this year, there’s a brand new Off-Road Sprint Triathlon, Duathlon, and AquaBike event. In addition to this, there’s both an Olympic and Sprint Triathlon, Duathlon, and AquaBike available, plus two trail run options.. a Half Marathon and a 5k.

Why Racing Events has got a packed schedule that first weekend of June! Saturday the 5th will be the Olympic Triathlon, Duathlon, and AquaBike events, as well as the Sprint Triathlon, Duathlon, and AquaBike. Sunday the 6th will be all the Off-Road events, which include another Sprint Triathlon, Duathlon, and AquaBike, plus a trail 5k and a trail half marathon (which, it should be noted, is actually 14 miles long rather than the standard 13.1 miles.) All of the events will start in waves at 8:00AM expect the Half Marathon and 5k trail race, which will both begin at 9:00AM. All athletes will be required to be out of transition by 7:45AM, no matter their race start time so that timing mats will be accurately set.

Consider making a camping weekend out of this fun event! Hagg Lake is offering up this one-time opportunity to camp at the park, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to hang out with your fellow athletes and have some fun. The cost is $15 per tent for one night and $25 per tent for two nights. Please be respectful of the camp rules and keep your area clean so that the camping option can continue in future years to come.

There is a $7 parking fee for access Hagg Lake, and this fee is collected in advance. When you register, you can add the cost of this fee to your payment for the event. Please don’t purchase a parking pass when you arrive at Henry Hagg Lake, and drive straight to Boat Ramp C with your parking pass. If you don’t pick up the packet and parking pass, you need to come to the Registration area of Boat Ramp C from 6:00AM to 7:30AM to get one. Car-pooling is encouraged and there is no parking on the road.

As always, Why Racing Events is offering up their special BEAST MEDAL if you complete any combination of events on BOTH Saturday and Sunday. Earn it!!!
