If you’re a runner, everyone already knows you’re tough as nails, so why not run a race that proves it? This year, the 2021 Tough as Nails Trail Race brought to you by Southern Oregon Runners will be an in-person event, though there is a virtual option if you still aren’t comfortable with the post-pandemic race atmosphere. This 10 miler and 5k event will occur on Saturday May 9th, and it will be held at Prescot Park at Roxy Ann Peak in Medford.
Since the world has changed since last year, there will be some precautions to be aware of. For one, the race is currently limited to 100 participants, though things may change as the race gets closer. Another thing worth noting is that there will NOT be any aid stations out along the course, so please plan on bringing your own race day necessities. The event will be cupless, so you will likely want to bring along a water vessel of your choosing to stay hydrated.
Please be sure to maintain a 6 foot distance from others as much as possible, and wear a face covering whenever that’s not possible. Please also avoid running in clumps and groups, as smaller/staggered groups would be ideal. Please don’t attend the race if you’ve been in contact with anyone with COVID-like symptoms within 10 days of the event.
Despite the fact that there aren’t any aid stations out on race day, there will be some volunteers out there to help point the right direction. Music will keep your feet (and quads) moving on race day from DJ Opie. All race proceeds will go to the Phoenix Talent Fire Relief Fund.
The course is compromised of a good mix of service roads and trails, and you’ll be running on some of Roxy’s newest trails. The 10 mile course will take you to 1800 ft of elevation. The 5k follows a clockwise loop on the service road around the mountain and an out and back at the end to get to the exact 3.1 miles. Both race distances will start and end at the upper gravel parking lot at the base of the peak.
The cost of the race is $40 for the 10 miler and $30 for the 5k. If you are a member of the Southern Oregon Runners, you’ll get a $5 discount. The virtual race is only $10 per event, or $5 if you’re a member. Prices will increase May 7th. Register now, while there is still room!!
