This week, we picked a segment that was on Matt’s 4.6 mile run in Dundee (read his post here). On his loop of the city, he tackled the challenging Southwest 5th Street Climb – which weirdly enough is actually on Northwest 1st Street. Not sure what’s going on there…
Anyways, this segment is almost exactly 1/3 of a mile, but gains over 133 feet in the process. I’d recommend tackling this one early in your run, when your quads and lungs can more appropriately handle the uphill. This isn’t a wildly popular run on Strava – with only 25 participants, so let’s add some more to that!
Also, if you use Strava (or want to get started – it’s free!) please join the Run Oregon club! We currently have 658 members! It’s a fun way to keep track of your miles and see how others in the area are doing and where they are running!.
As of January 24, 2021, the course records for the Southwest 5th Street Climb are:
Women’s: Leah Frazier Allen from August 2017, 2:50
Men’s: Run Oregon’s own Brian Bernier from January 2018, 2:05
Strava is an online training and racing log for runners and cyclists. The basic account is free and requires you to create a login. There is also a premium version, but in order to run and record routes as described in this post, you do not need to subscribe to their premium service. Note that this is not sponsored by Strava, nor endorsed or supported in any way by Strava. It’s just a fun thing we’re going to do to give some speedy shout-outs to area runners and pose a challenge to those of you willing to take on their segment.
