Kegs & Legs Beer of the Week: Rip City Lager from Deschutes Brewing

I love beer. After now having visited over 560 different breweries, it’s fair to say I have sampled a lot of beer (follow me on Untappd). From post-race pints and run club meeting locations, to beer miles and relays, running and the kegged nectar seem to go hand-in-hand in Oregon. Our Kegs and Legs feature is where beer drinking runners like me can go to find some new favorite beverages.

Well, as I sat down to start writing this post, the Trailblazers were tied with the hated Lakers at halftime of what would eventually become their final game of the season. I pulled out a Rip City Lager, one of the latest releases from Deschutes Brewery. Though it didn’t cause a season-saving rally, it was a refreshing take on the genre and the can just looked awesome in my hand.

Before we jump into it, let’s start off again with a little snippet from our previous posts about Deschutes:

Deschutes is an Oregon success story – growing and expanding into many states, with plans for an operation in Roanoke, VA – all while staying true to the local scene and remaining employee owned? Despite their growth, they remain super committed to environmental causes and sustainability. I have been to their large production facility just west of the Deschutes River near the Old Mill district in Bend. They also have a brewery/restaurant location in downtown Bend a relatively new (a few years) establishment in The Pearl in PDX.

This lager (not my favorite style in the world – but can be good in certain situations) is as smooth as a Damian Lilliard jump shot. It has a little bit of lemony tinge that keeps things crisp and interesting. While it can (and should) be a go-to for Blazers games next year, it also doubles nicely as an end-of-summer backyard drink as well. The can artwork itself is quite beautiful and gets me amped for next season (assuming we can all stay safe between now and then)!
