Virtual Race Preview: 2020 Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k

There are many things I took for granted before the pandemic shut us all inside, and one that I hadn’t really considered was the thrill of standing shoulder to shoulder with other runners in the starting line chute, wondering if I’d eaten enough or dressed correctly, feeling those pre-race jitters, and finally crossing the finish line to a shiny medal and more race swag than I probably needed. You don’t really miss these things until they are gone, and now that three of my planned races have been canceled, (with likely more cancellations on the horizon,) I’m feeling that itch. I’ve considered a few virtual events here and there but I hadn’t truly felt excited about running in a long while .. Until I heard about the 2020 Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k.

This popular RAM Racing event has a virtual opportunity for me and you, and “America’s Sweetest Race” is worth getting excited for. The original race begain in 2008 in Chicago, Illinois and since then, over 200,000 runners have come out in droves to run the streets in search of chocolate at the finish line.

I’m not going to lie .. The race jacket was the first thing that perked my interest in the race. I’ve got about a million race shirts and more than a few jackets, but this one is a full-zip fleece-lined jacket with a hood that’s honestly a steal for a race that only costs $40. In addition to the jacket, participants will receive a finisher’s medal featuring a chocolate bar on the 15k medal and a silver mug on the 5k medal as well as a finisher’s certificate. And best of all, registrants will get a chocolate “Finisher’s Kit,” which is full of delicious good quality dark chocolate which has no compounds and is gluten and nut free. This award-winning goodie bag is more than worth it. Make-A-Wish® is the official race charity for this event, so that should make you feel pretty good too.

If you’re new to running virtual races, here’s how this one works:

  1. Register for either a 5k or a 15k before April 30th. You’ll receive your race packet in the mail about 7-10 days after this. You’ll get all your race day swag, including your bib, your medal, and your yummy chocolate, all in a reusable drawstring bag.
  2. Once you get your race packet, you’re ready to race! You get to pick when and where you want to run or walk your race. That’s right, anywhere, anytime. Tag the race @hotchocolate15k in your race photos so you can share the experience with other runners!!
  3. After you finish your race, head over to your EnMotive account to download your Finisher’s Certificate. The run must be finished by May 31st in order to receive the certificate.
  4. Enjoy your win in your new jacket and medal, and enjoy all that chocolate. You’ve earned it!

Hurray for the Hot Chocolate 15k/5k! It’s a reason to get excited and out the door this race season. See you there .. Kinda.
