After I moved to Portland, I spent years not having an alliance to the University of Oregon or Oregon State University. I went to college in another state, at a much smaller university that had a football team (I think). Since I was not a duck or a beaver, a friend told me I was a platypus. (Thanks Todd!)
For those who are more passionately connected to one of these universities, or a running platypus like me, there is a relay race this December that gives you a chance to visit both college towns in just one day. The Civil War Relay starts this year in Eugene (it flips depending on which university has the home game that year). The race is a one-day, 52-mile relay that has 25 legs, so every participant gets to bust out a couple of miles then break to cheer on their teammates.
The race begins at Alton Baker Park and ends at Linn Benton Community College, using the shoulders of roads in between. With each leg approximately two miles, it will be quick flashes into the scenic Central Oregon, then back in the van again.

Teams can be between one and five participants. Yes, that means if you want, you can run all 52 miles on your own. Or round up some runner friends to share this adventure. Each team must supply its own vehicle and supplies. And each team must either supply a volunteer or pay a donation to Volunteers With A Purpose.
In return, your runners will experience an adventure, earn a race shirt, and score lots of bragging rights for their team. Go platypus!
