Race Preview: The Great Turkey Fumble 2019 (Newberg)

For some folks, Thanksgiving Day is all about the turkey. For others it’s the football games. And for some (like me), it’s the 5K race to earn all that pumpkin pie. I’ve just recently learned about an event that can bring so many of those people together.

The Great Turkey Fumble. Where football meets a 5K.

The event starts at Newberg High School Football field. But it does not start with a traditional starting line and buzzer. No, before you can start your 5K run (or 1K walk) each participant has to catch a football-collecting-turkey to get a football. That football needs to stay with them throughout the event (and then is a prize for keeps).

That football will be needed for three challenges along the course:

  • Turkey Back Throwing Challenge
  • Wide Pilgrim Catching Challenge
  • Kick It On the Mayflower Kicking Challenge

Participants only get one try at each of the challenges, so aim carefully. But not to worry, you’ll be able to use your new football to keep practicing no matter what.
